The Syrian refugee crisis and the fight for breath, seen through the eyes of a 9 year-old girl, met by a same age Macedonian girl, merge into a silent fight for hope.

Synopsis:

At a dark dock, people are secretly loaded onto a fishing boat. Among them is Dunia, a young girl with chestnut eyes, curiously watching as she is led into a cramped storage space filled with fish. A single oval window lets in a trickle of fresh air.

As the boat sails, passengers struggle to breathe, packed like sardines. Dunia’s face appears at the window—gasping for air, eyes full of wonder.

Two days later, the boat is intercepted by the coastal police. From a beach, seven-year-old Bibi watches with her family. Her father explains it’s a routine check. On their way home, they stop at a roadside market, where Bibi meets Dunia. Instinctively, she buys two dolls and gives one to Dunia, but adults quickly pull her away. Bibi notices them loading people onto a truck covered with wooden planks.

As they near the border, Bibi watches groups of migrants—walking under the scorching sun, huddled in makeshift camps. She realizes Dunia is one of them. At a rest stop, she sneaks a look inside the truck.

That night, as her family unpacks, Bibi clutches her doll. On the news: a truck found with suffocated migrants. Tears fill her eyes. She turns to her parents—then quietly lifts a blanket inside their camper, revealing Dunia, hidden beneath.
